This is a movie about perspective: With every changing role her husband takes on over the day, so changes the way Nadie views him. With her changing views of him, he transforms, into her lover, a
caring grandma, a helpless little boy, even into a huge, agitated Cow that is suffering from a panic attack.
That these transformations never appear outlandish, but rather as the most natural storytelling device, is one of the magical features of this movie.Set in the rhinelands coal-mining industry, It
tells a story about two people, who might or might not still love each other, and who, despite facing an uncertain future, navigate the struggles of daily work and family life together.
This movie is carried by the incredible performances of Aenne Schwarz and Carl Ljubek, as well as the superb camera work of Jan Mayntz and the incredible sensitivity and instinct for movie
making of Michael Fetter-Nathansky.
The film score is my first - and hopefully not the last - collaboration with Ben Winkler.
The film does not utilize a lot of music, but when it does, it is always well placed, thought-out and distinctive.
The score prominently utilizes Plucked Strings, like the Charango, the Ukulele and the Guitar, accompanied by Cembalo-textures played with an EBow, and a few contrasting piano pieces with
beautiful noisescapes.
